Curb tree dropped thousands of seeds on my lawn last year. Seedlings sprouting like mad. How to eliminate?

Dont know name of tree (subsequently removed), but seeds were about 1 inch long, oval shaped. I've tried a lawn weed killer (Ace Green Turf Weed & Feed, with 2,4D) but no help. Knowledgable advice requested.
