License for RVs pulling trailers?

Lately I've been seeing a lot of huge motor homes (cl A??) pulling trailers, boats, and in one case, a box trailer with a CRV attached. The drivers seem to be typical RVers, late middle age. Do you have to have a CDL to drive an articulated rig close to 60 feet long or is a regular license all that is needed??
