Helping a relative with electrical work?

if i help a relative upgrade his electrical panel at no charge ,am i responsible if any damages happen ,no negelct just a blown transformer for a exhaust fan in the attic,that overheated and then the fire dept doused the attic with water ruining the drywall ,carpet ,,but since i was there 1 month ago ya know
