PS3 firmware download question?

ok i have the ps3 slim,i recently bought online the game called pain it ask me for a firware update to play that game which i think was the latest update because is a pretty new game,but today i bought burnout paradise which is a 2 year old game and ask me to download the v1.90 firmware update,so whats the deal?if the latest update is the 2.60 i think why i gotta go back to download the 1v.90 to play burnout?and will i be able to play the game pain again with the v1.90 update? and is taking for ever too im here for more than an hour still at 44 %.
